Upcycling Studio specializes in eco-bio responsible architecture that is in perfect harmony with the climate as well as the unique character of the locality and its inhabitants.
Written into the very DNA of Upcycling Studio is the rejection of the wastefulness of closed cycles through the leveraging of recycled water and materials, the use of local or natural resources on site as building and/or finishing materials, and the creation of buildings with positive energy.
Upcycling Studio offers assistance to builders during their construction or renovation projects in the use of eco/bio-construction techniques, advising builders from the planning stage through the completion of the project.
Upcycling Studio also offers services in self building, PEB (energy performances of buildings) studies, or PHPP (passive houses) studies along with consultation about your energy and architectural choices.

“Upcycling” is a term coined in the 1990s to describe the concept of recovering leftover material or products in order to repurpose them, and that is why we have chosen this term for the name of our architecture studio.
The Upcycling architectural studio is comprised of two associates, Jessica Verhasselt and Philippe D’Hoest, and they are the ones who will assist you throughout your project, from drawing up the plans to monitoring the construction site.

Yes, as long as there is an energy performance objective within your project.
The recovery and re-appropriation of materials provides a multitude of aesthetic possibilities, depending on each person’s taste. We could, for example, suggest cladding for sheathing or scaffolding siding; glass bottles for transparent walls; wooden pallets for stairs, or even exterior walls of tires covered with lime.
Upcycling Studio dedicates all of its energy and resources to architectural jobs. For this reason, we do not do real estate promotions, nor do we prospect for our clients.
Upcycling Studio doesn’t specialize in this type of construction; however, we have done it, but always in accordance with our work philosophy: Ecology, Energy, and Recycling.
Our approach aims to create customized buildings that match the plan laid out by the project supervisor, taking into account his budget, the nature of the terrain, and the criteria of bio-climatism. Every project is therefore unique and cannot be repeated for another client on another terrain.
We have chosen this name because we wished to specify our approach to architecture. Architectural firms specializing in eco-construction are not unusual. What differentiates us is our approach to recycling and recovery in the construction industry. Upcycling studio d’architectes sprl is an architectural workshop that develops buildings with positive energy. In complementing the usual vision of sustainable development, which requires decreasing the impact of construction on the environment, we offer to increase its positive footprint. In our projects, we strive to reject the idea of wastefulness by fostering closed cycles, by leveraging the recycling of liquids and materials, but also by using local resources for construction and/or finishing materials. We work with natural materials according to the logic of local production as well. We are committed to a truly contemporary mindset concerning the spatial and aesthetic qualities of our buildings
According to our work philosophy, this term combines two ideas: bio-construction and eco-construction.
For us, bio-construction consists of creating buildings that are respectful of humanity and nature. In our projects, this idea expresses itself through the choice of ecological materials (cellulose flakes, wood fiber, hemp concrete, etc.)
Eco-construction, by comparison, envisions globally respectful construction all along its processes through the reduction of its energy footprint at both the utilization and construction level (i.e. carbon footprint, or the energy used for construction). Our definition of “eco-bio construction” also includes the concept of “bio-climatic” construction, defined as an architectural style that derives an energy advantage from working with the climate rather than against it. “Bioclimatism”, then, is a collection of architectural strategies and techniques utilizing the climate to obtain buildings with low energy consumption: how to take advantage of the location, the climate, and solar energy through the use of greenhouses, solar walls, Canadian wells; how to ventilate naturally while retaining heat in the winter and cool air in the summer; how to conceive of walls that are insulated with ecological materials and are healthy and comfortable year round, etc.
These concepts can obviously be further refined, especially in conjunction with ethical criteria.
That all depends on the type of project, delays in obtaining construction authorizations and site delays. However, in our experience, a project lasts between 1 ½ to 2 years, from the first meeting until the client takes possession of the building.
Absolutely. Lightweight construction with a wooden framework is just as sturdy as “hard” construction. However, eco-bio construction is not simply wooden construction. It is equally possible to build with a system of load-bearing walls of terra cotta or mud blocks, for example. Furthermore, you always have the benefit of a guarantee from the architect and the builders of your building, whether using eco-bio construction or not.
